A male suspect entered the Maverik and loitered for a while before approaching the clerk. The suspect then brandished a handgun and demanded cash. The clerk complied and the suspect initially fled westbound on 300 South where he got into a brown vehicle with another male and drove off. Suspect description: a white male with a goatee, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a white hoodie underneath and wearing sunglasses. He told the victim his name was “Mike.” Video surveillance is not available at this time.

While crossing Redwood Road at this location, two boys, ages 7 and 11, were struck by an older, full-sized van. The van also struck a northbound vehicle. The boys were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

SLCPD investigation into computer attack continues; please change your password

If you are receiving this email, it is because you supplied your email address to the Salt Lake City Police Department through its website, www.slcpd.com. As we continue to investigate the scope of the computer attack (Police Department Website Temporarily Offline Due to Hack), we have learned that citizen complaints regarding drug crimes in the community were also accessed. These forms included phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, other personal information, and details about suspicious activity from a variety of sources. As a precaution, SLCPD advises you to change email passwords immediately, especially if you used the same password for the SLCPD website that you use at home or work. Rest assured, SLCPD is working diligently to find a solution so it may continue its public safety partnership with citizens.

An officer was following up a case where the suspect fled from him last week. He notified West Valley Police and they met him at the above address. When they made contact at the residence, Miguel Franco (12-24-86) fought with the officers. A Taser was deployed and Miguel was taken into custody. He was taken to jail for: 2 counts of Assault on a police officer, warrants, and the fleeing charge from last week.

Police Department Website Temporarily Offline Due to Hack

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s website, www.slcpd.com, has been taken offline due to a security breach.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, odd postings started to appear on www.slcpd.com. According to claims posted on Twitter, the hacking collective Anonymous claims it launched the attack in response to an anti-graffiti paraphernalia bill being proffered by a state senator who neither represents nor resides in the city.

While the hackers obtained email information of registered users, there is no indication that confidential information was compromised. The website was built as a standalone communication feature to increase dialogue about public safety issues in a proactive manner. For this reason it was not integrated with Department or City databases.

While this cyber-vandalism in no way impacts the core functions of the agency, it certainly inconveniences those citizens who work in partnership with the Police Department to make the city a safer place to live, work and visit.

Officers to Give Holiday Safety Tips to Sugar House Shoppers

Public safety outreach event

Salt Lake City Police Department Community Officers will be out in force Thursday afternoon to educate Sugar House shoppers about holiday safety.

“The holidays require just a few simple things to stay safe, from keeping purchases out of sight in the car to keeping gifts out of the front window at home, from keeping candles away from Christmas trees to not overloading electrical outlets with strands of Christmas tree lights,” said Det. Scott Smalley, Community Officer for District 4.

“We just want to talk to folks and remind them about what they can do to have a safe and happy holiday, and answer any public safety questions they may have,” Smalley added.

Community Officers invite the media to join them on this public safety outreach event, one of several the unit has been conducting this month.

SLCPD Releases Photos of Broadway Market and Pharmacy Robber

The Salt Lake City Police Department is asking the public to help identify a man suspected of robbing the Broadway Market & Pharmacy, 242 E. 300 S., over the weekend.

At approximately 1 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2010, the suspect entered the store and handed the cashier a note demanding all of the cash. No weapon was displayed, but the cashier did not risk his safety and gave the suspect the money. The suspect then fled the store on a black mountain bike in an unknown direction.

Suspect description:
• male white adult
• age: 30s to 40s
• bald
• wearing distinctive eyeglasses (see picture)

The Department asks anyone with information about the suspect to call Dispatch at (801) 799-3000. Callers may remain anonymous.

Under the City’s Tips for Cash program, the Police Department offers up to $3,000 for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of armed robbery suspects. To report criminal behavior through this program, call (801) 799-INFO (4636).
