1421     Motorcycle Traffic Accident       925 N. Chandler Drive                12-49590

Trent Demille, 25, was operating a motorcycle westbound on Chandler Drive. The motorcycle left the roadway and crashed at 925 North Chandler Drive. Demille was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

1345     Aggravated Assault       500 W. 200 S.                                       12-48947

A 35-year-old man was walking his dog and saw Marcus A. Washington (8/24/83) standing on the corner.  The man believed Washington was drug dealing and he asked Washington to stop selling drugs.  Washington pulled a knife on the man and threatened him before leaving the area on foot.  Officers located Washington nearby and he was booked into jail on charge of aggravated assault. 

GRAVEYARD SHIFT

0213     Fight                             650 W. South Temple                            12-49398

Officers responded to the area on a fight in progress involving multiple individuals.  As the officers arrived, several suspects ran. A 21-year-old male ran onto the roadway from behind parked cars and was struck by a police car that was coming to a stop.  With the help of two K-9 Carl Naccarato (12/3/87) and Lusiate Leota (8/27/86) were taken into custody nearby. Bird was medically evaluated on scene and released.  Naccarato and Leota Bird were booked into jail on a charge of fleeing from a peace officer.

AFTERNOON SHIFT

1852     Shots Fired                   1300 W. Ouray Ave.                               12-48460

Multiple gun shots were fired, striking two different homes and a vehicle.  Witnesses related that an 80s-model burgundy Cadillac with a tan rag top approached a green minivan.  Three armed suspects exited the Cadillac and yelled at the occupants of the minivan before firing multiple gunshots at them.  The suspects fled in the Cadillac.  No one was injured during the shooting.  The suspects are all described as white or Hispanic adult males in their 20s and approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall.  This investigation is ongoing. 

GRAVEYARD SHIFT

A 44-year-old man, who was asleep on his couch, awoke to find a man inside his home.  The homeowner chased the suspect out of the home and called police.  The suspect was described as being 6 feet tall and wearing all black.  A K-9 unit searched the area but did not locate the suspect.  Police received a second call from another person who reported seeing a man wearing a black ski mask in the area.

0348     Aggravated Assault       140 E. 900 S.                                        12-48739

A 40-year-old man saw a male spray painting graffiti on the side of a building.  The suspect had arrived with several other males in a white sedan.  The man approached the vandalism suspect and tried to take a picture of him with his cell phone.  At that time the suspects in the sedan accelerated toward the victim.  The victim attempted to jump out of the way but the sedan swerved and intentionally hit the victim on the leg.  The suspects in the white sedan then left the area westbound.  The victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition with leg pain.  The vandalism suspect ran on foot southbound through an alley.  The vandalism suspect is described as a young Hispanic male adult, 5 feet 6 inches tall.  He wore a red shirt and a white jacket tied around his waist.

Killed in the Line of Duty 
89 Years Ago Today

The Salt Lake City Police Department remembers the loss of one its own: Sergeant Nephi Pierce, killed in the line of duty March 26, 1923.

Sergeant Pierce died from the effects of a gunshot wound inflicted four months earlier by an armed-robbery suspect.

Shortly after midnight on November 27, 1922, Sergeant Pierce and Officer George Watson were on foot patrol near 525 S. Main Street. As they attempted to question two men matching the descriptions of a pair of robbery suspects, one of the suspects drew a gun. As Sergeant Pierce sought cover behind a tree, a suspect shot him once in the abdomen. Officer Watson was then pistol-whipped and left for dead.

The two suspects were captured the following morning. Officer Watson recovered, but Sergeant Pierce’s spine was severed. Their assailants were convicted of assault and sent to prison.

When Sergeant Pierce died four months later, the shooter was convicted of murder and executed by firing squad February 20, 1925. The second suspect was paroled in 1926.

Three months after the death of her husband, Marie Pierce committed suicide in the couple’s home. The Pierces had no children. They are buried beside each other in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT

0014 Strong-arm Robbery 200 S. 500 W. 12-47965

Two men in the shelter area got into a fistfight over the sale of folding knife. A nearby security guard intervened to break up the fight. At the same time a female adult ran up to the scuffle, pulling the knife from the male’s hand and ran off with it. Police arrived and found the female nearby, confronting and commanding her to drop the knife. She threw down the knife but refused to identify herself and resisted as the officer attempted to take her into custody. Ultimately she was handcuffed and then began to calm down. Racehorse Rainee (7/4/81) was booked for Robbery, Fleeing, and Resisting. No one was injured during the incident.

1438     Foot Pursuit                  1700 S. Richards Street                         12-45241

Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction.  As the vehicle came to a stop the driver, Ronald Smith (10/19/79) ran from the vehicle.  After a brief foot pursuit Richards was taken into custody.   As Smith ran he threw two small packages, which officers recovered.  The packages contained small amounts of methamphetamine.  Smith was booked into jail on charges of fleeing from a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT

0030     Homicide Arrest                        7200 South I-15                                     12-42855

SLCPD SWAT and Safe Streets Task Force Officers took Yelfris Sosa-Hurtado (8/13/86) and Vladimir Suarez-Campos (8/2/74) into custody without incident for their involvement in the shooting death of Steven Chavez at the CJ Smoke shop located at 876 W. 800 S. The Homicide occurred on March 14, 2012. The traffic stop was made at 7200 South I-15 as the suspects exited the freeway.
