SLCPD Reminds Public of Conference Weekend Parking, Traffic Congestion
Plan ahead, park where legal
The Salt Lake City Police Department is preparing to handle traffic congestion and parking issues downtown as more than 100,000 people attend the 182nd Annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this Saturday and Sunday, March 31 – April 1, 2012.
The Police Department’s Motorcycle Squad will provide traffic control, while parking enforcement officers will ensure access is maintained in residential neighborhoods adjacent to the LDS Church’s Conference Center and Temple Square. Cars improperly parked on neighborhood streets may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense.
North Temple between Main Street and West Temple will be closed for 30 minutes at the end of each conference session in order to facilitate egress.

A male called from a hallway phone in an upper floor lobby stating that everyone should get out due to a bomb in the hotel. Officers coordinated with hotel management and security who conducted a search of the entire property. Nothing suspicious located.

Mark Cowans (3/30/70) was involved in a verbal altercation with his wife. She left the house and Mark found her walking with two males. Mark got out of his vehicle and grabbed onto his wife. He attempted to push her into his vehicle but she refused to go with him. He then pulled out a .22 caliber revolver and pointed it at the two males and his wife. He threatened to shoot the males. The males then left the area and called police. Mark was found at his residence and was taken into custody safely. The gun was also located. Mark was booked into jail for two counts of aggravated assault and one count of domestic violence aggravated assault.

In Memoriam: Detective James W. Cawley

Killed in the Line of Duty

The Salt Lake City Police Department remembers the loss of one of its own today: Detective James W. Cawley, killed in the line of duty March 29, 2003.
Detective Cawley was killed in Iraq on Saturday, March 29, 2003, defending the freedom he so cherished. He was serving as a Marine Reservist and Staff Sergeant of the 1st Platoon, Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment.
After 12 years of active duty with the Marines, Cawley joined the Salt Lake City Police Department on April 10, 1997. He served honorably as an officer, a detective in the gang suppression unit, and a member of the SWAT team.
Whether serving as a police officer on the home front or a Marine in a faraway land, Detective Cawley was willing to sacrifice his life in the name of peace, safety and justice. His life revolved around serving others, and that service can best be summed up by the words inscribed at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial: “It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.”
Detective Cawley is survived by his wife and two young children.

Officers responded to Pioneer Valley Hospital to investigate an allegation of child abuse. A three-year-old victim was found to have a significant injury to his ear. The victim’s father, Lee Otukolo (12/19/85) was booked into jail for felony child abuse.

Officers were conducting a traffic stop at the above location. As officers were standing at the open driver’s door, they noticed the driver had illegal narcotics in his possession. The driver sped away dragging the officer approximately 50 feet. The driver crashed into another vehicle and fled on foot. The suspect was apprehended by officers and safely taken into custody. The driver of the victim vehicle and the officer were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital. Alejandro Murillo-Escobar (2-14-88) was booked into jail for possession of controlled substance, fleeing, aggravated assault, and other miscellaneous charges.
