‘Friendly Reminders’ on Main Street
SLCPD prepares for City Creek opening
In preparation for the opening of the City Creek Shopping Center on Main Street, Salt Lake City Police Officers this week will be issuing friendly reminders about public safety.
“We anticipate more than 50,000 people daily will visit City Creek Shopping Center once it opens on March 22. Our intention is to remind everyone about the laws and ordinances that keep us safe,” said Chris Burbank, Chief of Police. “The Police Department is excited about the prospect of more people visiting downtown and interacting with our officers.”
SLCPDbike officers will patrol the Central Business District to highlight behavior that would otherwise earn someone a ticket and fine. They will caution pedestrians and motorists who, for example:
The awareness campaign is modeled after an outreach program that dates back to the 1950s (see attached images), which Burbank called a “friendly reminder about the role we each play in maintaining public order.”

Officers were patrolling the above area, and noticed two males acting suspicious and exchanging something. The officers attempted to make contact with the two individuals when one of them dropped something and took off running. Officers pursued the suspect and were able to take him into custody. Conrado Garza (11/19/78) was booked into jail for possession of a controlled substance and fleeing.

The victim was sitting in his vehicle at the above address when an unknown male attempted to get into the passenger side of the vehicle. The suspect then went to the driver’s side door of the vehicle. The victim got out of his vehicle and confronted the suspect. The suspect grabbed the victim and threatened him with a knife. A struggle ensued and the victim received two minor cuts on his arm that did not require medical attention. The victim was able to runaway and into a nearby business. The suspect got into an unknown vehicle and left the area. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers were investigating a call at the above location when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed sideswiped an unoccupied Police vehicle. The suspect continued driving away from the scene. Officers were able to stop the vehicle a short distance away. Michael Penna (9/12/88) was booked into jail for DUI, Hit & Run and resisting arrest.

Multiple
people called police to report hearing gunfire.
Officers located a 21-year-old man inside of a parked car with a gunshot
wound to his leg. The victim told
officers that a young Hispanic male adult approached his car, yelled gang
related terms and opened fire on the vehicle.
The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was found in
possession of a significant amount of cash, user amounts of cocaine, heroin and
marijuana. The cash was seized and drug
possession charges will be screened with the District Attorney’s Office.

Multiple
gunshots were fired into a home occupied by a family. No one in the home was struck or injured. No
suspects have been identified. This
investigation is ongoing.

A
79-year-old man was reportedly driving erratically when he made a left turn
from eastbound 300 South to northbound State Street. The man’s vehicle struck a parked car, causing
serious damage to both vehicles. The man
was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

A
22-year-old man drove southbound on 700 East.
As he approached 1300 South, his car swerved off the road, drove over
the west curb, and struck a tree. The
collision caused the vehicle to roll onto its side. The driver was partially ejected and required
extrication. He was transported to a
local hospital in serious condition.
1936 Burglary in Progress 759 S. Gladiola St. 12-39990
The
owner of Broke Down Towing saw a man stealing batteries from vehicles. Arriving officers contained the area and
located Valente Jose Manzanares (3/10/67).
Manzanares was booked into jail on theft charges.

Traffic Stop 500 S. Navajo St. 12-40098
Safe
Streets Task Force Detectives attempted to stop a Jeep Cherokee for a traffic
violation. The driver of the Jeep, Manuel Flores (3/20/86), fled from the
detectives, who did not pursue him; however, the detectives saw the Jeep
abruptly stop approximately one block away.
Two occupants ran from the vehicle and after a brief foot pursuit Officers
took Flores and the passenger, Danny DeLeon (7/27/90), into custody. The Jeep was not listed as stolen. Both men were booked into jail on several
charges that included failure to stop for police and fleeing on foot.

Ninette
Willie (12-30-82) had an ongoing disagreement with a 41-year-old woman over a
male friend. Willie pushed the victim to
the ground, pulled her hair, and then took her purse. Officers located Willie in the area and
booked her into jail on a robbery charge.

In Memoriam: Officer Carl J. Carlson
Killed in the Line of Duty 83 Years Ago Today.
SALT LAKE CITY—The Salt Lake City Police Department remembers the loss of one its own: Officer Carl J. Carlson, killed in the line of duty March 9, 1929.
Officer Carlson died from injuries he received during a liquor raid the previous day. The 39-year-old victim and fellow officers raided 23 S. West Temple, where they located several barrels of mash. One of the 50-gallon barrels fell on Officer Carlson’s foot, causing him to jump back and strike his head against the wall.
Following treatment for the foot injury at the hospital, Officer Carlson attended a wrestling exhibition. There he was found semi-conscious, clinging to a lamppost. Taken to the hospital, he died the following morning of a basal skull fracture.
Officer Carlson was married and the father of six children. He is buried at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
The Police Department wishes to thank the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial for its assistance in this remembrance.
