Police Ask Public to Take Another Look at Photos of Suspect

Aggravated robbery charges possible

The Salt Lake City Police Department is asking the public to take another look at surveillance images from the March 20 attempted robbery of a Maverik convenience store.

Initial media reports focused on the somewhat comical comments made by the suspect, who did not want his mother to know what he had done. Based on further investigation, detectives believe the suspect intended to cause the clerk serious bodily harm.

At approximately 4 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010, a young Hispanic man entered the Maverick store at 2680 S. 2000 E. and began selecting items for purchase. While the clerk rang up the sale, the suspect walked around the counter, produced a knife and tried to attack the clerk. Sensing a threat, the clerk turned abruptly and stopped the suspect.

According to surveillance images, the suspect is a:
• Male Hispanic adult
• approximately 20-24 years old
• 5 feet 4 inches tall
• 150 lbs.
• wearing glasses, black jacket, blue jeans, and black shoes with white trim

The Police Department asks anyone with information about the suspect to call (801) 799-3000. Callers may remain anonymous. Please reference case #10-48462.
